What "Moneyball" actually means

Most tournaments pay the winner and send everyone else home with a handshake. This one doesn't. Every division plays for a progressive cash pool that grows as the bracket fills, paid across the whole podium — 50% to gold, 30% to silver, 20% to bronze. Cash activates once a division hits 8 teams, and the pool climbs from there:

8–9 teams
$250 pool — $125 / $75 / $50
10–11 teams
$400 pool — $200 / $120 / $80
12–13 teams
$550 pool — $275 / $165 / $110
14–15 teams
$650 pool — $325 / $195 / $130
16–18 teams
$700 pool — $350 / $210 / $140
19–20 teams
$800 pool — $400 / $240 / $160

On top of the cash, every division winner takes home a pair of Apollo paddles (yes, that's us — we're proud to back every single division), plus custom Rally medals for gold, silver, and bronze. Divisions need a minimum of 4 teams to run, and paddles are awarded in every division that runs even if it doesn't reach the cash threshold. So here's the honest incentive: recruit your friends into your bracket. The fuller it gets, the more everyone plays for.

DUPR-rated, with real ceilings

If you've been burned by sandbaggers, this format is the fix. The Rally Open is fully DUPR-rated — every match counts — and divisions have hard DUPR ceilings verified at the door. Link your DUPR account to your player profile and register for the division that matches your rating; organizers review every registration and will move players to keep matches fair. All doubles, eight divisions:

Men's
3.499 & Under · 3.999 & Under · 4.5 & Under
Women's
3.499 & Under · 3.999 & Under
Mixed
3.499 & Under · 3.999 & Under · 4.5 & Under

The format respects your Saturday too: a minimum of 4 matches and up to 8, so nobody drives in for two games and goes home. And every division plays a real bronze medal match — third place is won on court, not handed out.

Entry, deadlines, and the fine print

Entry is $70 CAD per player until August 29, then $75 from August 30 (the platform adds its service fee at checkout). It's doubles, so your spot isn't locked until both you and your partner are registered and paid — until then you're on the waitlist, so grab your partner early. Refunds run until September 1 (less a $15 admin fee); after that spots are transferable to another team but not refundable.

💰 Register before August 29 and save $5 — and either way, get in before September 4 at 8 PM ET when registration closes. Over 100 players are already in and brackets fill from the middle divisions out. Register on pickleballtournaments.com →

One logistics tip from the organizers that's worth repeating: in your player profile, set "receive in-game text messages" to YES and select your cell carrier. Court assignments and match calls come by text on event day, and a missed text can mean a defaulted match. Arrive 30 minutes before your start time.

Getting there — it's right in the city

No highway pilgrimage this time. The Rally Open runs at Pickleplex Social Club – Downsview, 40 Carl Hall Rd, Unit 49, North York — inside Downsview Park in the middle of Toronto, with free parking on site. If you're anywhere in the GTA, this is about as easy as tournament logistics get:

Why Apollo is backing this one

We get asked to sponsor a lot of things. We said yes to this one fast, because it's built the way we think Canadian pickleball should be built: by a player, for players, in partnership with a great Toronto club, with a format that rewards the whole podium instead of just the winner. Putting a pair of Apollo paddles in the hands of every division champion is exactly the kind of thing we want our name on.

Two practical notes for competitors: paddles at this event must be USA Pickleball approved — Apollo's MK47 — Signature Pro and NYX Pro both are, and we ship free anywhere in Canada with no import fees or duties. And the official ball is the Franklin X-40, so grab a couple and get your reps in before the 12th.

Each division plays for a progressive cash pool that grows as it fills — from $250 at 8–9 teams up to $800 at 19–20 teams, split 50/30/20 across gold, silver, and bronze. Cash activates at 8 teams; divisions need 4 teams to run, and Apollo paddles go to the winning team in every division that runs.

What paddle and ball rules apply?
Paddles must be USA Pickleball approved — Apollo's MK47 Signature Pro and NYX Pro both qualify. The official ball is the Franklin X-40.
Can I get to the venue without a car?
Yes — Downsview Park station on TTC Line 1 and the GO Barrie line is a short trip from Pickleplex, making this one of the most transit-friendly tournaments in Ontario.
