Everyone's number is lower than their 18Birdies. All nine of us. Because we're using your best 3 rounds, not your average.
And if you still think yours is starting too low, you probably cheated your way to that score. Free drops. Breakfast balls. Gimmes from downtown. Miscounting and hoping nobody noticed. Fluffing your lie when everyone was looking the other way. Those extra strokes might cost you the belt.
Don't agonise over whether the numbers feel high or low overall — only the gaps between players affect the result. If everyone gets marked down, nothing changes. Just get the order and spacing right.
Before you get clever. Marking the whole field low does nothing at all — your card gets compared against itself, so an across-the-board tilt cancels out. The one thing that does cost you is going soft on yourself while going hard on everyone else. We measure that gap and half of it comes straight back off your own handicap, up to 3 strokes. Try to buy yourself an edge and you'll finish with fewer shots than you started with. Being generous to everyone is free.
