Exciting News for Calgary and Alberta Pickleball Players: 12 New Courts Open at Foothills Athletic Park

Calgary’s pickleball enthusiasts have something to celebrate! As of September 23, 2024, a dozen new pickleball courts are officially open at the Foothills Athletic Park, located at 2431 Crowchild Trail N.W. These courts, built on the site of the old Volleydome, offer a fresh, modern space for players of all skill levels to enjoy this rapidly growing sport.

A New Chapter for Pickleball at Foothills Athletic Park

Construction of the courts began in July and wrapped up last week, transforming the area into a dedicated space for pickleball lovers. Operated by the staff at Foothills Athletic Park, the $400,000 project showcases Calgary’s commitment to meeting the increasing demand for pickleball facilities.

"While these courts are temporary until funding is secured for the Foothills Multisport Fieldhouse, they’re a great addition in the meantime," noted the City of Calgary in a recent news release.

What’s Next for Pickleball in Calgary?

These temporary courts are just the beginning of a larger vision for the area. Once the Foothills Multisport Fieldhouse is fully funded and constructed, it will feature gymnasia courts capable of being configured into as many as 36 pickleball courts. Until then, players can enjoy the current courts on a first-come, first-served basis. By 2025, the courts will integrate into Calgary’s Live and Play booking system, making it even easier for players to plan their games.

A Growing Pickleball Scene Across Alberta

Pickleball continues to thrive in Calgary and across Alberta. With more than 160 outdoor tennis courts in the city, many adapted for pickleball, Calgary is quickly becoming a hotspot for the sport.

Other recent developments include new pickleball courts in the East Village and a combined pickleball and dog park in a Calgary neighborhood, reflecting how the city is innovating to meet the needs of its residents.

Why This Matters for Pickleball Players in Calgary and Beyond

As pickleball grows in popularity across Canada, access to high-quality facilities like these helps foster community, encourages healthy activity, and supports the sport’s evolution. These new courts provide an opportunity for players in Calgary and throughout Alberta to come together and enjoy one of the fastest-growing sports in the country.

Whether you’re a seasoned player or just discovering the joys of pickleball, the new courts at Foothills Athletic Park are a welcome addition to Calgary’s vibrant pickleball community.
